Located south of the Sydney CBD, the Sutherland Shire in a local government area that covers approximately 370 square kilometres with a population of just around 220,000. Captain James Cook first landed in Botany Bay in Kurnell, a suburb of the Sutherland Shire, which was intended as the point where the British first settled in Australia. Some of the major commercial areas of the shire include Cronulla, Caringbah, Engadine, Menai, Miranda and Sutherland.
